Abstract:
Importance and use of internet is increasing day
by day in many different ways. Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia which
provides various features like writing pages, editing, adding information
to that page, talk pages for discussions on various topics. All these features
help people to come together and construct knowledge. This emerges the need
to study the awareness about the facilities provided by wikipedia and extent
of use of these facilities by the targeted students.
Objectives of the research were:
- To find out the purpose of use of wikipedia by post graduate students
- To find out the awareness of various features provided by wikipedia among the post graduate students
- To find out the extent of use of different features of wikipedia by post graduate students
- To find out the preferences of different features of wikipedia by post graduate students
- To study the extent of satisfaction of post graduate students pertaining to use of wikipedia
It
was a quantitative research which adopted survey method. The research was
conducted on the post graduate students from three departments of each
from the SNDT University and Mumbai University in Mumbai city. It was found
that 75% students use wikipedia to collect more information which is helpful
for them in their studies. But there is lack of awareness about the various
features provided by the wikipedia.
