Abstract:
One of the fields in which computer has a huge potential is in the field of education. One of the most common applications of the computer as a tutor is in drill and practice. Drill and practice involves any exercise, physical or mental, that is performed regularly and with constant repetition. It is often associated with rote-memory learning.

Objectives of the research were:

  • To deploy the significance of drill and practice mode of CAI
  • To study the strategy in drill and practice program
  • To study the instructional design aspects in drill and practice program
  • To compare traditional approach with the modern approach in development of drill and practice
  • To find out ways of making drill and practice program more interesting

The study was conducted as follows:

  1. Collection of information about drill and practice mode of a CAI.
  2. Collation and grouping of information
  3. Finding out the useful strategy
  4. Selection of three drill and practice programs for evaluation
  5. Preparation of a tool for evaluation of CDs
  6. Evaluation of a tool by experts
  7. Evaluation of each CD by author as well as 1 external person
  8. Data collection and analysis of the data
  9. Finding conclusions

Among the three evaluated CAI packages of drill and practice mode:–
Spelling and Grammar – Spell It Deluxe by Davidson Learning Center is found to be best, Multimedia and Trigonometry is found to be good and Mathematics for 10th Standard is found to be of poor quality.
