Topic: A Study of Effectiveness of Using Text Message/ SMS to Support the Teaching- Learning Process in Distance Education.

Abstract:
Among the many forms of E-learning, m-learning or mobile learning is the new addition to its vast possibilities. Considering its minimum multimedia functionalities, m-learning has developed speech-to–text and vice-versa and Short-Messaging Service (SMS) facilities.
M-Learning is the most useful supplement to ICT, online learning and other traditional learning methods. Researcher aimed to find if a Mobile phone integrated with internet resources, could be used in providing support to teaching-learning environment.
SMS, being one of the common features available on all phones, was considered as a medium of instruction for this research.
Objectives of the research were:
- To study the extent to which SMS can provide guidance through SMS in the learning process in the distance education.
Design
Experimental Research Method, single group pre-test and post-test design.
Samples
The study was conducted with 12 Master students using Single group pre-test and post-test experimental design.
Treatment
The topic selected for teaching was ID competencies. Pre and post test on this content and opinionnaire were developed as tools. SLM was developed on this topic and SMS was used for treasure hunt game with clues, quizzes, questions and feedback. The activity continued for 10 days.
Findings
70% participants achieved mastery over the content through SMS.
The major difficulty faced was adjusting the text information within the specific SMS character length and network availability. Students showed very positive opinion about the SMS technology.
Conclusion
SMS was found very flexible, time saving and interesting tool and could be effectively used for distance education, especially for a small content.
