Abstract:
The use of electronic technologies for delivery of instruction continues to grow at an exponential rate. More universities are seeking ways to use online tools to deliver instruction as the technological infrastructure expands in terms of its capabilities and power. Use of web for formal and informal learning activities is occurring across subject areas.   

Online community is a group of people that primarily interact via communication media, email or Usenet rather than face to face, for social, professional, educational or other purposes. If the mechanism is a computer network, it is called an online community.

Objectives of the research were:

  • To study perception of participants about Online Community as learning environment.
  • To study perception of participants about Online Community as a tool to share and construct knowledge.
  • To study different aspects related to online behaviour.
  • To study the use of Online Community by Instructional Designers.

The findings of the study is that majority of the samples replied that Online Community is a good medium to share and construct knowledge apart from socializing. Majority of the samples said that Online Community can serve as a good learning environment and more online community should be built.
